Azay-Le-Rideau

imageThe chateau of Azay-le-Rideau in the Loire Valley is a beautiful and fairytale like castle.

It was built on an Island on the River Indre by a wealthy financier Gilles Berthelot during the reign of Francois 1. The chateau was confiscated in 1528 by Francois 1 after Berthelot was implicated in the embezzlement prosecution of his cousin who was the Finance Minister. Francois 1 then gave the chateau to Antoine Raffin who was one of his Knights-Of-Arms.

A gorgeous looking building and grounds and probably features a lot in the dreams of many young girls wanting to be a princess.

The small town of Azay-le-Rideau is quaint and has some nice little shops although the cafes etc are bit touristy but still definitely worth a wander through.
